Polished concrete project receives awards

The Preparation Group, specialists in surface preparation, maintenance and finishing, has supplied training and equipment for an award-winning project. ‘The Cottage’, a family home for Guy Hollaway Architects’ Principal Partner, was transformed from an 18th Century dwelling into a 21st Century family home with polished concrete taking centre stage for the surfaces and floors both internally and externally. The Preparation Group delivered a 3-day polishing course to the project manager and supplied an STG400 machine, Surface Finishing Diamond Pads (SFD’s) and Storm Diamond Pads.

The project has won the Sunday Times British Homes Awards trophy for Home Extension of the Year and in November, it won the George Clarke Medal inaugurated this year, which recognises and celebrates the UK’s best architect designed home refurbishment, conversion or renovation schemes.

Says Tracey Glew, The Preparation Group’s Managing Director; ‘If you are laying a new concrete floor or have an existing concrete subfloor, you don’t need to cover it. Grinding and then polishing it presents a good sustainable design flooring option because it makes use of the materials already present. Most modern buildings are built on a concrete slab and it is something to consider when building or modernising towards a more “green” solution.’
